Identity Fraud Awareness Week

The week of January 26th has been designated as Identity Fraud Awareness Week. This week is designated to bring awareness and education to consumers about identity theft. At Northwoods Community Credit Union, we encourage our membership to be knowledgeable about identity theft and keeping your information safe.

Identity theft occurs when someone can access your personal or financial information without your permission. Using this personal information, the thieves are able to open financial accounts in your name, apply for credit cards and loans, and submit false income tax returns in your name.

As a consumer, it is important that you take steps to keep your information safe.

  • Review your credit report and make sure that you recognize all the accounts that are listed in your name. You are entitled to a free credit report annually by visiting Annual Credit Report.com - Home Page. Consumers can start disputes of incorrect information through this website as well.

  • Use extreme caution if you are asked to share personal information, such as your social security number.

  • Create strong passwords when using online accounts.

  • Don’t give personal information to someone who calls, emails, or texts you. It could be a scammer trying to get your information.

  • Make sure that you are shopping at secure websites online.

  • If you receive an offer for something that seems to good to be true, it most likely is a scam.

  • Northwoods Community Credit Union has information available on a variety of topics that can assist you with keeping your information safe. Please stop in to our offices to pick up information or call for assistance with finding information online. Our website, as well as our social media sites, often have posts about scams and identity theft.

If you find yourself the victim of identity theft, do not feel ashamed. Reach out for help. There are resources to help you through the process. NCCU is able to provide materials to you to begin the process of recovering from identity theft.

Stay alert and vigilant!
