ATM Safety

ATMs and ITMs have become part of our everyday life. They offer convenience to those on the run and give us access to our accounts 24/7. However, we need to keep in mind that as with anything involving our money and our personal information, ATMs present an element of risk.

With some basic safety tips, you can make the use of ATMs much safer for you and your family.

  • Choose ATMs that look and feel safe to you. We have a list of Alliance Network ATMs that our Debit Cards will work at Fee Free here:

  • If it appears that the card swiping mechanism or any part of the machine have been tampered with, don't use the machine.

  • Try to limit your use of ATMs to daylight hours. Most ATM robberies occur between 7 pm and midnight.

  • If lights around an ATM are not working, don't use that machine.

  • When you approach an ATM, scan the area first for loiterers.

  • Have your card ready and once you have completed your transaction, leave quickly. Don't count your cash in public.

  • Beware of offers for help from strangers during an ATM transaction.

  • Do not write your PIN (Personal Identification Number) or account number on a slip of paper or the envelope you keep your ATM card in.

If robbed:

  • Don't argue with the robber, give up the cash. Your life is more important.

  • Don't fight with or attempt to follow the robber.

  • Drive or walk to a safe place and immediately call the police.

These rules apply whether you are using a drive-up ATM, a stand-alone machine or an ATM that is located inside a building. If you feel that you are in danger or that someone is acting suspiciously, leave or drive away immediately, even if it means leaving your ATM card in the machine. By following these tips, you can enjoy the benefits of using an ATM while limiting the risks.
